Sohna is derived from the hindi word Sona, which literally translates to the metal gold. The town is said to have derived its name form the gold dust which was found tin the sand of streams after heavy rains in the neighborhood. The town is especially known for its natural hot springs and the famous Shiva temple. 


On September 5,2014 the Government of Haryana upgraded the City as Municipal Council from a Municipal Committee. Sohna lies in the District of Gurugram and is divided in to 15 wards. Present-day Sohna, also known known as Greater Gurugram or South Gurugram, is spread over an area of 5 square kilometers and has a total population of around 35,000 with 47% female population. More than 65 villages come under the Tehsil Sohna. 


Sohna town is situated on the highway from Gurugram to Alwar and is connected to Gurugram via Sohna road, Because of its rich cultural and archaeological  heritage and easy accessibility, the city is a popular tourist weekend get-away and a conference retreat.
